Make this rich, creamy white pizza sauce from scratch. This easy, homemade garlic pizza sauce is the best sauce alternative to tomato pizza, ready in minutes for your next pizza night essential.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  2. Whisk in the flour to create a smooth paste, called a roux. Cook the roux for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Slowly pour in the warm milk while whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  5. Continue to cook, stirring until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth and rich. This usually takes 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Remove the sauce from the heat. Use immediately as the base for your white pizza, chicken pizza, or veggie pies.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute 1/4 cup of the milk with 1/4 cup of softened cream cheese when adding the dairy.
  • If you prefer a thinner sauce, add a splash more milk or cream until you reach your desired consistency.
  • This sauce works well as a savory white sauce for pasta dishes as well.
