Make this easy stovetop homemade applesauce using fresh apples. This recipe is naturally sweet, perfect for snacks, side dishes, or baking applications, and captures the cozy aroma of fall.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the chopped apples and water into a large pot or Dutch oven.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the apples are very tender.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice, if using.
  5. Mash the apples with a potato masher for a chunky texture, or use an immersion blender for a smooth consistency. Blend until you reach your preferred texture.
  6. Serve the applesauce warm, or cool completely before storing.

Notes

  • For a naturally sweeter applesauce, choose naturally sweet apple varieties like Fuji or Gala.
  • If you prefer a thinner consistency, add water, one tablespoon at a time, while reheating.
  • This homemade applesauce stores well in the refrigerator for up to one week.
